A New Look, a New CMS

We’ve been focusing our efforts on building Harmony the past few months, but we recently carved out some time to give our site some much needed love and attention.

This design has been waiting in the wings for a few months, and now that Harmony is able to handle most everything this site needed, we’re ready to make the switch. We’ve reorganized and replaced some content, so I’m sure a few things will be broken. If they are, just let us know.

Also, this design uses some pretty advanced CSS3, so things might not look quite the same in older or less capable browsers. We’re fine with that, and will likely give them a little more love in the near future.

We hope you enjoy the new version of OrderedList.com.

Nicely done. Love the new look and can’t wait to get a chance to play with Harmony. I’m sure it’s come a helluva long way since SXSW when you (Steve) showed it to me.

  • Viking KARWUR

Well done Steve… Congratulations… Let me try “Harmony” :)

  • Joseph McLaughlin

Looks great! I kinda miss the brown though, it was one of the nicest looking brown site designs on the interwebs…

  • Keith

Wow, really like the visual styling here! I’m a sucker for the spectrum/color thing. It’s easy on the eyes, sexy even. :)

Also, really cool to have a site running on Harmony to look at! Congrats!

  • Steve Smith

@Chris Harrison: Thanks, and yes, quite a bit further indeed.

    @Viking: Thanks much!

@Joseph: True, the brown was fun, but change is good.

@Kieth: Sweet, glad you like it!

  • Jeff Mackey

Beautiful site. Love everything about it. Great job. And yes, can’t wait to try Harmony!

  • Galen King

Nice work guys. Looking great. Can’t wait to try Harmony either ;) Keep up the great work—love your stuff.

  • Nate Klaiber

Love the new look and feel. I am with Keith, I love the spectrum look – with the transparency. Beautiful.

I saw Rails Tips and such were moved too, nice you have all of them moved – congrats on the great progress.

  • Ben Hunsaker

I’ll be honest. I didn’t like the rebrand the first time I saw it, but the more and more I look at it, the more I like. I now like it a lot. I think that is a good indicator of a great design, will it hold up to scrutiny. Will the design still look and feel good, or even better, after the initial shock factor fades. Great job. I especially like all the CSS3 features, and the three column layout. Apparently I love all your work guys.

  • Ryan Heath

Love it. Transparency and text-shadow’s are used perfectly in this design. Excellent job!

  • John Nunemaker

@Ben Hunsaker: Funny thing is I completely agree. When Steve first showed me the mockup I wasn’t sold. I had him email it to me and I kept looking at it each day for the next few weeks and man did it grow on me. Now I love it!

  • Tim Brio

Thats a good look people. Will be checking Harmony this weekend, never even heard about it.

  • Jason Beaird

It’s a total departure from the previous Orderedlist look, but so was the last design, and the one before that. As always though, its a very well-polished and unique design. Congrats!

  • Bryan

Looks great man. I love the background and the fine smaller details everwhere!

  • Julian Schrader

I’m with some of the folks above—at first I was concerned about the overall style, but man did it grow on me after clicking around a bit!

Very nice design, Steve & John!

  • Chris Erwin

Love the new design, and nice use of HTML5 the source looks so much cleaner! I’ve gotta jump on that bandwagon.

  • Brendan Falkowski

The code block -webkit-scrollbars gave me the vapors and green is back, I’m most pleased.

  • John Nunemaker

@Brendan Falkowski: Haha. Totally, those scrollbars are wicked. Non-webkit people are missing out.

  • Bill

In chrome, all the font’s look messed up and the scroll bar is fubar.

  • Joe Stevens

    Looking fantastic

  • Rolando Murillo

Lovely, John and Steve. To be honest, I didn’t like too much the last design. But these one is great.

  • Steve Smith

Bill: Yeah, hopefully they fix that when they update the beta.

Rolando Murillo: The last two designs were sort of an experimental venture in style. It was fun, but this design gets back to some of Ordered List’s design roots.

  • Roger

Nice use of Cufón here, methinks.

Regarding Harmony, I still have not grapsed the fine line between those two tag delimiters {{ matched pairs of braces }} vs. {% matched pairs of braces and percent signs %}. ModX uses something similar, so there must be a reason.

But that’s a topic probably better suited elsewhere…

  • John Nunemaker

@Roger: {{ }} is for outputting data from objects and filters. {% %} is for tags like nav and blocks like for loops and if statements.

  • Voyagerfan5761

I like the design. It’s clean and attractive, and simultaneously manages to unobtrusively highlight the important stuff on the page. Well done! Would you consider porting it to a WordPress theme? Or maybe a Blogger theme? I don’t know if either of those is possible, but the WP theme especially would be a great contribution to the community.

And of course, no need to release until after the next redesign. ;-)

  • Mel

this is a great design. why do you not make some tutorials how to make this?

  • Steve Smith

Thanks for the kudos folks, and I do like the idea of tutorials on some of this stuff. Good call. Check back soon.

  • phil

I really like the flavor of colors! and that the comment box change between dark and bright grey makes the reading easier!

I also like the link href color. looks like grasshopper green :-)

  • Webstandard-Blog

It seems to be a very easy handling Steve and the Design of the CMS looks great.

  • marv

hi. i google for ready cms and i found you ^^ i like your design, it is different from others, nice to look for eyes and smooth for reading. a praise from me :)

  • Luke Dorny

Very cool, you two. Excellent work!
Great job with your html and see-ess-ess.
Oh, hey, i can’t see the “Post Comment” button bounds.

  • Marcel Korpel

Hi, in Chrome, as Brendan Falkowski already mentioned, the scrollbars get distorted, but in Safari/Win it gets worse: just one big grey bar without any controls.

Also, in Chrome in Windows, the text box is a bit shifted to the left, which results in a disappearing cursor when it is positioned at the utmost left point, which is confusing (I initially thought I didn’t select the box). I will test this in Chromium (Linux) when I’m back at my Linux terminal.

Oh, and tabbing my way through this form doesn’t function intuitively: when I tab in this testfield, I get at the next hyperlink in the right column on top of this page, not at the name field, what I would expect.

That said, I like this design a lot, nice colours!

  • David Rapson

I’m really looking forward to having a play with harmony when it comes out of private beta, particularly based on how gorgeous the user interface looks.

The new look is really nice as well, although I agree the issues with scrollbars in Chrome, they’re kind of wacky.

I know it’s not quite as nice bandwidth wise but it might be cool to use png for the background image, jpeg seems to cause quite a bit of colour banding on gradients, which is a shame given how strong the background image is. I’m sure you probably already considered this so feel free to ignore me.

  • Marcel Korpel

I am viewing this page in Chromium 4.0.249.64 (Linux) now and the above mentioned problem doesn’t appear: the cursor is positioned exactly at the left side of this text box.

  • Joy

Hi you :) you have a very great and impressive site, i like it very much. have you make it completely self?

  • Spielzeug

Looks great! I’m using an older browser and there are no bugs.

  • Planszowe Gry

This cms looks very good. I hope it will run fast and be more optimaize than other CMSes like WP or Drupal.

  • Daniel Black

    Hi there,

Great look, and lovely typography even in FF 3.6.x on Linux. One thing, though: I wonder if you might pay attention to tab order. Tabbing from the comment box takes me to the top-most link in the right sidebar, and then I need to tab through all right-sidebar links before hitting the “Name” field.

Just a subtlety I noticed. Beautiful work.

  • Jared Christensen

I can not wait to try Harmony, hope you launch it soon :)

  • Robert

ME too . I am really ecited to try it out

  • sklep modelarski

    Excellent work!
