Harmony Documentation

We’re finally revealing the tip of the Harmony iceberg in the form of a nearly-complete documentation site that will fuel our beta testers, and help future customers hit the ground running once the CMS is released.

I say ‘tip of the iceberg’ for two reasons. One, Harmony has been in the making for 18 months now, and has been under constant revision, refinement, and improvement the whole time. It’s was clear when we started Harmony that we knew what direction we wanted to go, but had no idea what it would become, specifically. But more importantly, reading about, and watching screencasts, just can’t give you the same experience. You really have to use Harmony to get just how intuitive and powerful it really is.

We’re happy to say that as we’re writing and testing some of the last bits of code before we can let other people use it, we couldn’t be happier with how Harmony is turning out. We love using it. And we can’t wait to make it better.

So head on over to the Harmony site, and check out what all the fuss is about. And don’t forget to check out the documentation. We’d love to hear what you think.

I can’t wait for this freakin’ app!!! Also, I just noticed that steve “the form” and john “the function” remind me of mike “the situation.” He kinda stole your guys nickname thing. And personalities. Keep working hard you clever so and sos.

I’m guessing that the Documentation site itself was created with Harmony?

  • Steve Smith

    @Nathan: Yes, it was!

  • Anonymous Bstard

Will Harmony be free, paid subscription or on-time charge?

  • John Nunemaker

@Anonymous – Despite the fact that you are anonymous and as such suck, I will answer your question. Harmony will be paid subscription. Billing will be at the account level. Accounts can have many sites and users and will have some of page view level. You can have as many accounts as you want to make it easier to split billing up. That is what we are thinking as of now.

Guys, congrats! It’s looking awesome. I’m truly excited about the potential of this as a platform. Well done. (Can’t wait to get in and have a play!)

  • Andrew Gregory

I am also very excited about this! I have been waiting for a powerful CMS… that is still user friendly. It looks like you have put a lot of thought into the usability. Hope to get my hands on this soon as I am currently redesigning my website and would like to use it! Great work.

Watched the videos yesterday, everything looks very refined. You guys have done an awesome job with this. Look forward to checking it out.

What a pity, that Harmony won’t be free. But nevertheless, I like it.

  • Alexandra Maier

Great thing, even it is not free. We will like it anyway.

  • Jim Jakobs

Hey, what do I read: not free? That is not so nice for the costumers, but: I wouldn’t give it for free, too.

  • John Nunemaker

Steve and I are the only people working on Harmony and we’ve easily got 1,000 hours each over the past year and a half. Does Apple give macs away for free? The iPhone? OSX? I’m not gonna lie, the attitude that all web software should be free blows my mind sometimes.

  • Mike Merritt

I don’t mind it not beeing free as long as you have a way for people to try it out to decide. If I understand correctly, Harmony is going to be a hosted service somewhat like BaseCamp? if so kind of torn on the thought of relying on your hosted application for my clients. Does that mean that if your host goes down or something goes wrong no sites running on Harmony will work?

Not sure if I missed a post about this stuff. It would be nice if you guys could clarify exacly what Harmony is in the documentation. I think more people than me might be confused about this, hence the negative reaction to it not being free.

  • John Nunemaker

@Mike – Yep, hosted. As far as trying it out, we aren’t planning on charging until a site goes live. That means you can work on the site and not pay a dime until it goes live. We’ve clarified that harmony will be a hosted solution on some other posts, but chances are others didn’t see those. No worries.

Harmony won’t be for everyone, but you’ll have plenty of chances to decide if it is for you before having to shell out that hard earned cash. :)

  • Mike Merritt

@John – Thats good to know. I look forward to trying it out and if it’s stable enough I’ll more than likely make the switch. Seems like such a huge step up over current CMS solutions.

  • Molly

this is truly a great app, its not free but i’m looking forward to it.

  • Ive Asana

Sounds good, if there is time to test it befor paying. – Its completly right not let it for free. Who would do this, if he had developed a thing like Harmony?

  • Jonas Arnklint

I really like your work with Harmony. @Jim, giving away stuff for free can be a good thing in certain situations, in marketing eg, but giving away a core product for free is simply stupid. Looking forward to see more good work from you guys.
