Your Thoughts on Content Management

John and I have been thinking about website and content management as of late, and we’d like to get a few more opinions on the matter. We’ve put together a short survey, and if you wouldn’t mind, it would help us out if you’d share your thoughts.

Update The Survey has been closed, and we are processing the data. Check back here soon for the results.

We’ll leave this survey open for a week, and post an analysis of the results here when it’s over. I think it should be interesting to find out some of the more general opinions of the available options in the content management world. Thanks for your help.

  1. Nice. Looking forward to the results of this. I want to build my own CMS http://magnitudecms.com. Haven’t got around to it yet though. Joomla works and does its job, its not as clever as I’d like it to be though. Like a single content item appearing in multiple menu areas with a single url but highlighting the menu item you clicked rather then bouncing you over to where the original item is – not sure how to explain that….

  2. Just letting you know, you have a spelling mistake in the first question, it should be “How many websites do you currently manage?” instead of “How many websites to you currently manage?”

  3. Alrighty, I filled it out. Although I am curious why you guys are doing this research. Dreaming up your own new CMS?

  4. Definitely looking forward to seeing the results, although I suspect I already have a pretty good handle on what they’ll be.

  5. So much open questions, I hope the results are representaiv. On the other hand each CMS has its own features and aims, so every comparison (and results) should respect that.

  6. I’ve posted my thoughts, which amount to “I hate Movable Type, I like WordPress.” I’ve never used Expression Engine, but I’ve heard great things, so I may give it a shot at some point. WordPress gets the job done and I’m quite used to it, plus I like the plugin support (and I can write my own in PHP if I need to).

  7. too bad i was too late for the survey :( but the idea seems very good :)

  8. I have a love/hate relationship with content management systems. In past jobs, I’ve worked with Documentum, Stellent/Oracle, and Vignette. I preferred Documentum for its standards support. As a hands-on developer, I like the ability to directly manipulate markup. Content management systems often feel like working in a straightjacket. Everything is hard-coded into templates and it’s difficult to change anything with IT intervention. And that intervention is expensive because it requires an expert in the CMS. These systems are sold on the concept of separation of content and presentation, and ease of redesign over a large number of pages. That promise is broken by systems that are so complex that only consultants can make changes. Also, why would anyone care to learn the complexity of Vignette, when they can go straight to web standards and accomplish the same things. And these things will work cross platform. End of rant.

  13. @Nicholas Orr – you cms looks nice but for geeks, not for normal people.

  14. Are you guys still working on the results? I’m pretty interested in those. :)

  15. So, uh, yeah, where are those results guys? :) Oh wait, a little project for “rhymes with WHYDEO” got in the way and deflated everyone’s energy…

  16. Is the results out??? I had used Mambo, which was later changed to Joomla. But the thing that I love is Wordpress, its easy to use. I had used expression engine once, not used but tried to use, and since I lack patience, I gave it up. So for me Wordpress Rocks, and based on how things are organized, my team is making our very own CMS which is very basic, but once the results are out here, I would see which things we can implement in our system.

  17. So when is the CMS launch date guys? :-)

I certainly hope there will be one, if it comes out of Sidebar it’s bound to be good.

I will echo what others have said, Wordpress is really great however.. I’d like to see a CMS like it but with more flexibility on the CMS and static page side of things rather then primarily having a blog focus. The ability to have complete control over the page layout and appearance, with drag n drop functionality to move say the navigation to the left or right, change mouseover link colors and that sort of thing right from admin without having to know CSS or switch out themes to get a different look.

  18. @Harish: I m following you. For me, too, Wordpress rocks. And I m making my own cms, too. So we should wait for the results coming out here and see….

  19. Guess I come here too late!
