Tiger Admin and Shuttle

Some people have been asking me what’s going to be happening to Tiger Admin now that Shuttle is being released. To be honest, I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be making an updated version to match the shuttle XHTML, but what I’m not sure of is the continued existence of the current two versions.

Another issue is timing. I’m not even sure when Shuttle will be officially incorporated into WordPress. If I could get a peek at the XHTML I could start working on it now so that the new TIger Admin would be ready when Shuttle is released. But I’m not sure if that will happen either. And here’s hoping the XHTML is a little more semantic in Shuttle than the existing WP admin.

So I guess I’m just asking what you think. Does the update to the admin UI in Shuttle fill the need? Do we even need an updated version? What about the old ones? Is Shuttle the only answer? Would Shuttle incorporate themes? Your turn.

  1. I really like TigerAdmin and how it looks and feels. The screenshots of Shuttle seem to be just a clean-up of the current interface and not anything drastically different, but for sure a lot better than the current one.

I would like to see TigerAdmin continue because I think there is a demand for a fine experience when using WordPress. TigerAdmin could be the high end interface for the particularly picky user. ;)

  2. While I am not a Wordpress user, I think even when Shuttle is incorporated into Wordpress, there will always be users who want to customise the look and feel of things. Sure lots of people will like Shuttle but there will still be others who might want to use something else and that is where TigerAdmin could come in.

  3. I have got so used to using TigerAdmin, that untill I can play around with Shuttle, it’s kind of hard to tell from screenshots whether it’s going to work as well as TigerAdmin.

I agree with Ryan—keep it going.

  4. Make more of Tiger Admin… PLEASE. The Shuttle project is alright, but it really just continues what WordPress 2.0 did with the Admin.

While it is slick and mature, I think you could really adapt a lot of what they are adding into Tiger and it would be even more slick and usable.

Please update Tiger when Shuttle is completely introduced.

  5. I hope you decide to continue developing Tiger Admin… from what I’ve seen of Shuttle, I haven’t been impressed and I would much rather use Tiger Admin than what I’ve seen of Shuttle.

  6. I’m pretty much with SHORTY114. After having a look at the latest mockups of shuttle, I was impressed, but soon the question arose, what takes shuttle so long to finally arrive… Clearly, if you have nothing than the default interface, then shuttle is going to be drastically better. But still no comparison to Tiger Admin.

I’m sure Khaled (and the shuttle-team) will do a fantastic job improving the default WP-admin interface, since the current one is usable and everything, but…

Well, and even before I knew of shuttle – that might be a year ago, since it’s announced for quite some time –, I came across Tiger Admin and immediately fell in love with it. Not only, because I’m a Mac user, and admittedly love the UI of the Mac, but also, because your plugin adds a real value to WordPress – being the (even greater) fun of using it.

So, please Steve, keep up the good work!

  7. Tiger Admin to the people!

  8. Keep Tiger Admin going, Shuttle looks ok but on the whole I am dissapointed by it from what I can see. I am so used to tiger now it’d be a shame not to keep it alive, it looks good, works well and brings a little bit of my mac to wordpress.

    KEEP IT GOING!

  9. Keep with Tiger Admin. It should be positioned as an alternative to the WordPress admin page; be it Shuttle or what ever. I’m keen to see the progress of Shuttle and some of the mock ups look good but until it’s release the user base of TA can only increase.

  10. I’m not even a Tiger Admin user but have been following the development of the plugin and will most certainly try it out in the near future. The Shuttle project shouldn’t bother you other than in development terms, because if the screenshots on the site is correct it isn’t that a big improvement according to me. I hope you will keep giving the Wordpress community the opportunity to choose their preferred layout in the future.

  11. keep up Tiger-admin! Focus on WP 2.0 admin.

hmm…... it’s too early to start coding. Wait more and see how is the acceptance of Shuttle by the final users and do a compatible version. After taking a look on the screenshots, the code it’s going to be so different than WP 2.0 admin, I think.

  12. Does the update to the admin UI in Shuttle fill the need?
It’s a worth upgrade from the current one. Shuttle will make WP in at least the same position as MT, etc as far as admin panel interface concerns.
Do we even need an updated version?
Of what? Tiger Admin? People love options, so, why not?
    What about the old ones?
Old Tiger Admin? And other admin themes? Huge chance they will break unless they get updated.
    Is Shuttle the only answer?
What question we’re trying to answer here? I believe people will still download your admin theme, if you update it, after Shuttle is implemented. Like I said, people love options, and they have different taste.
    Would Shuttle incorporate themes?
Shuttle project was more of front-end mod, which only involves mostly html, css, js. Matt once asked in wp-hackers mailing list if someone could propose a solution for themes in admin panel. No one has come up with anything so far.
  13. Definitely keep it going. It looks like there are some cool new features in Shuttle that could be incorporated into Tiger, and I think that Tiger will still have a place. Shuttle is one thing, Tiger is another, and personally I’ll prefer Tiger :)

  14. Um…what?? ;)

  15. The Tiger admininterface is looking pretty cool, but when the new Shuttle admin interface will be included in a new version of wordpress I will no longer use Tiger.

Could you tell what the timeline/roadmap will be when Shuttle will be included into wordpress? When looking at the roadmap for 2.1. I can’t find anything about it, see:

    http://trac.wordpress.org/query?component=Administration&milestone=2.1

Furthermore It is to bad that no end date has been set for the 2.1. release…

  16. From what I’ve seen of both, I’m sticking with Tiger Admin. Shuttle just doesn’t go far enough for me… :)

  17. I’m all for the Tiger WP Admin plugin. I’m not a huge WP user, however, everytime I’ve played with it, your plugin was the first I installed. Like so many comments before mine, people do love options and yours is more like a staple for so many.

Tangent: Now, if the textpattern community could just rework their admin interface, I could finally use it without cringing.

  18. i like Tiger Admin.. and i’m sticking with it as well.. i think shuttle will be a step in the right direction .. but it won’t be enough for me…

  19. The big disadvantage of the Tiger plugin is that it is only working with Firefox. If I am not mistaken the Shuttle admin console also works with Internet Explorer. The last part is a big plus since some of the users where I am creating a weblog for only use Internet Explorer!

The disadvantage of the Shuttle admin layout is that I don’t have a clue when it will be incorporated into the WordPress version. There is absolutely no timeline of the Shuttle layout available and the Tiger plugin can just be downloaded and installed…

  20. As humans are diversified, some love Mac, some love Windows, and so, some will love Tiger Admin, and some will love Shuttle. To have Shuttle / Tiger Admin successful, either plugins need to have theme options. Users could then built or import the type / look that they ‘love’.......

  21. Shuttle won’t be enough for me. Tiger admin is for to great, I’ll use it eitherway. But I really hope we can expect updates.

  22. I just discovered Tiger Admin and want to use it badly. My only concern is that it’s not overly compatible with Camino, but I’m willing to switch back to Firefox to use it. Would love to have it be fully compatible with Camino though.

  23. Shuttle is a lot more functional and a lot better looking than the existing admin but it’s still just not as pretty as Tiger.

If a Tiger for Shuttle exists, I’d use it.

  24. As of this week, it appears no code has been written for Shuttle. Everything so far is mock-ups and defining concepts/parameters. This used to be referred to as vaporware ;’)

To stop work on Tiger based on some mocked-up images would seem premature.

  25. I think that the main issue of the admin is that it should be more application-like than web-like. I mean, the interface should be contained within a window (within a single page) without having to scroll (window paradigm vs page paradigm).

This is the main reason for the little change to the Tiger CSS I’ve sent to you some days ago: making it more application-like.

But, I think that this couldn’t be obtained through a CSS or style change, or if this could be done it needs a really good markup on the WP-Admin. I’ve been a bit disappointed that the Shuttle project still uses a page paradigm instead of a window paradigm.

  26. Please keep developing Tiger Admin. I use it for a WP site for cuuriculum development at my university. Nice and easy to use for a bunch of non-techy Mac users who are now forced to use a website. I’ve got 50 teachers used to it, so I’d really appreciate the continued development. I’d send you a link, but my department made me put the whole shebang behind a passwaord so nobody can see it ;-(

    Anyway, thanks for Tiger Admin.

  27. Carry on, but also improving Tiger compatibility as well, it only works well with firefox, unfortunately. Thanks
