FeedBurner FeedSmith

Over two years ago, I released a WordPress plugin that helped bloggers forward traffic of their local RSS feeds to a service called FeedBurner. Since then, the plugin’s popularity has been astounding. Several updates have been released, and tens of thousands of downloads later, it’s time for the next chapter in the story.

FeedBurner

I have officially handed over development of the plugin to the great folks over at FeedBurner. I’ve visited their office on a few occasions, and they’ve always been kind and accommodating. They loved the popularity of the FeedBurner plugin, and just how easily it allowed WordPress users to take advantage of their services. Given that my development in WordPress has slowed, I thought it only fitting for them to take new ownership of the plugin.

They were more than receptive, and since taking official ownership a few weeks ago, have retooled and rebranded the plugin, which is now known as FeedSmith. I have to thank FeedBurner for the hat-tip in the name, and also for their willingness to work on the plugin. So you can now get any and all FeedBurner Plugin FeedSmith downloads, updates, and instructions over at the FeedBurner site. Enjoy.

  1. Please tell me you got a fat check for it! Great news Steve and great work. Cheers!

  2. This is one of the best WP plugins out there. Congratulations on FeedBurner taking it over.

  3. That is so cool that they are doing that in recognition of your excellent efforts. I’m sure they’ll take good care of it. Great plugin! :)

  4. Congratulations! I love this plugin.

  5. Congrats! That’s nice that they agreed to take over management of it and name it in your honour. They are really supportive of their community and it’s one of the reasons why I like them.

  6. Indeed, this couldn’t have gone better. I’m sure it’s somewhat of a relief to have it off your plate since you’re no longer using WP. And for them to give you full credit for the initial development and the whole name thing – well, that’s just down right awesome. I upgraded first thing this morning. Whoo!

  7. Good for you! I hope the FeedBurner crew takes good care of it.

  8. Brilliant idea. Thanks for very interesting article. btw. I really enjoyed reading all of your articles. It’s interesting to read ideas, and observations from someone else’s point of view… makes you think more. Keep up the good work. Greetings

  9. [Tear] This is like your last tie to wordpress…

  10. Don’t tear up to much J David, he’s still got Tiger Administration” under his belt that’s WordPress specific… unless Steve is going to hand this off too? Uh oh… [tear] :)

  11. Yes, very cool with the whole naming thing, and who better to look after the plugin than Feedburner themselves, they didn’t even cross my mind when you said you had someone ‘lined up’ in your post ‘passing the torch’.now all I’ve got to do is install the updated version.

Big thanks to you for getting it to where it was up to now.

  12. Dude – They already dropped the ball. Clicking the download link on their site does not work (at least in firefox). It just sits there! Tried “Save link as” and it fails after entering the filename and clicking ok. Not looking good for you (or me looking everywhere for the plugin – uhhh).

  13. Great plugin name!

You have a great design in this blog, I really like your Productivity and Fascination post :)

  14. This is great for you Mr. Smith!

Look at what is happening, makes your Feed plugin even more popular!

  15. Thank you very much for this great plugin!

  16. The Plugin is very nice and simple. Congratulations. Thank You

  17. wow—your contribution is significantly more important now that FeedBurner may be an acquisition target of Google …... your plugin helped people get their information out there faster and easier …. a cause worthy of making an application catch Google’s eye if there ever was one

  18. What ever happened to Canary Reader that you were developing ?

  19. I guess that feedburner is now being purchased by google, I wonder why does it happen, that’s why I wish to change my default feed with feedburner plugin.
